Private Museum Description
Inhotim is a unique site that offers a broad ensemble of art works, displayed outdoors as well as in both temporary and permanent galleries, all located inside a Botanical Garden of extraordinary beauty. The landscaping was originally inspired by famed architect and landscape artist Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994), and rare plant species are distributed in an esthetically pleasing manner throughout an estate which also sports five lakes and a preserved forest area.
The art collection comprises over 500 works by artists of national and international renown, such as Adriana Varejão, Helio Oiticica, Cildo Meireles, Chris Burden, Matthew Barney, Doug Aitken, Janet Cardiff, among others. Inhotim distinguishes itself from other museums by offering artists unique conditions for developing their art right inside the park.
Covering an area of 97 hectares (some 240 acres), the Botanical Garden has some impressive collections, such as the Araceae (Arum family, including the anthurium and the philodendron), Vanda orchids, and particularly an incredible variety of over 1400 species of palm trees. Botanical and landscaping studies and projects are developed jointly with government and private entities.
