Private Museum Description
Open on September 11, 2016, Voorlinden is situated near the Wassenaar dunes. Forest, winding waters and vast grasslands characterize the landscape. The opening exhibition in Museum Voorlinden brings and ode to the late artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015). It is the first solo exhibition of the American artist in The Netherlands since 1979. James Turrell designed a Skyspace especially for Museum Voorlinden. It consists of a space with a square hole in the roof, through which the viewer looks directly upwards and sees the air as never before. In creating this Skyspace, Turrell created a program of light, which factors in the dusk in Wassenaar. The soft natural light is in contrast with the bright, almost palpable colours of the lamps of the Skyspace. The effect is breathtaking. The internationally-renowned landscape designer from the Netherlands, Piet Oudolf, designed the gardens around the museum building.
